Flourishing/thriving individuals of any age, status, or background often have one factor in common: mentors. Mentors who take a “holistic” approach positively impact the lives of mentees. Vital components such as attunement, capacity building, and trust competencies, and skills for compassion-based empathy, resilience, and interpersonal connection, grow the mentoring relationship.
Mentoring has been expressed as a powerful, interpersonal, and transformative relationship augmenting both individuals' growth and advancement in a long-term affiliation. Yet a loss of relational skills coupled with a shortage of mature guides and an absence of potentially fruitful legacies persist as a major predicament in the United States.
Overall, good mentors guide by developing essential life skills in a process that develops the whole person and emphasizes holistic wellbeing. Both formal and informal mentoring environments afford the mentee with abilities to strengthen the knowledge, abilities, skills and/or behaviors needed to efficiently meet a mission or goal, manifesting in domains such as resource mobilization, learning opportunities and development, sense of community, leadership, communication, participatory decision-making, shared vision and clear goals, partnership/networking, process and outcome monitoring, and commitment to action.
